By Tom Boyles | PMQ’s PIzza Australia

The Pizza Wars between Australian chains is intensifying. Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Eagle Boys have battled over bragging rights as to which chain is the best in Australia but with the insertion of Crust Gourmet Pizza Bars, it seems the battle may get more heated. With Crust introducing a line of premium pizzas, the other Big Boys are working to make sure they don’t lose their position as the top 3 chains to the up and coming Crust brand. Domino’s launched a campaign to promote newer and fresher ingredients along with pasta additions while Pizza Hut also has begun to promote their pastas. Eagle Boys Pizza has countered by launching a $7 million, year-long campaign to revitalise its pink logo and unveil a new range of pizzas.

While the Pizza War may give more exposure to the top three chains as well as the up and coming Crust brand, this doesn’t necessarily mean bad news to the independent pizza owner. With more promotions the thought of pizza and consumers’ favourite pizza shops will be top of mind. This can be a good opportunity for the independents. If you already have the freshest ingredients, or currently have pastas on your menu, promote yourself and independent pizza shop. You can “ride the coattails” of the massive marketing campaigns of the chains.

CORRECTION In the last issue, on page 19, PMQ made a mistake that we would like to correct at this time. In the lower right corner there was a promotion for a new seasoned black steel pan. In this promo the logo for Metal Spinners (08 8268 2928) was placed there by mistake when in fact the promo was for Murdock Metal (03 9544 4492). I would like to personally apologise to both of these companies for that mistake and for any confusion this may have caused.
